The purpose of this study was to explore the determinants of depression of elderly patients living at home with poststroke hemiplegia in Korea. Demographic and illness-related characteristics, activities of daily living, religiosity, family support, acceptance of disability, and depression data was collected from 104 patients using self-report questionnaires. The result showed significant differences between general characteristics and depression, which of them were age, income, frequency of disease, and region of hemiplegia. Also, activities of daily living, religiosity, family support, and acceptance of disability revealed significant negative correlation with depression. It was found that acceptance of disability, family support, region of hemiplegia, and frequency of disease accounted 58.2% of the variance for depression. It is imperative to explore strategies for elderly patients with poststroke hemiplegia to develop their acceptance of disability, identify and maximize their resources, and enhance physical activity and spiritual growth, which would improve emotional state.
